Hi everyone,

I'm applying for github education student but I have a big problem, the document uploading method is only through webcam (or it's the only way appearing in my case idk), and I'm a student at the university of the people which is a 100% remote, which means that all my documents are soft documents or digital; thus I can't upload any document that I have because the only way that I can do is to take a shot via the webcam, which is impossible because even if I print the document it won't be clear enough to be acceptable, is there anyway to upload my documents?

Hi @Ingestrom,

Unfortunately, the upload option isn't always available and manual reviews aren't provided so you have to submit a live photo using your device's camera.

Documents that prove your current student status include a picture of your school ID with current enrollment date, class schedule, transcript, and affiliation or enrollment verification letter.

So you can try with any of the above documents or anything that can prove your current student status.

If your device doesn't have a webcam, submit the application using another device, such as a smartphone or another PC.

If the photo is blurry, try again until it looks good as also indicated in the Student Developer Pack Application FAQs:

Your first and last name, complete school name, and a date demonstrating current academic affiliation must appear in your document.
Make sure the image is clear and easy to read; if it looks blurry, please take a new photo. 👈

Also make sure to fill in your billing info and GitHub profile with your full name exactly as it appears on your academic transcript and don't use a VPN. Then log out and log back into GitHub before reapplying, because the application system gets stuck in a loop even after the required information has been updated.

If you experience issues with the application, I recommend you contact support by opening a ticket here, select "Other" and explain your problem.

Hello, that's a very common frustration, especially when dealing with fully remote institutions like the University of the People (UoPeople). GitHub's automatic verification process sometimes defaults to the webcam option, which doesn't work well for digital documents.

Here are the best ways to successfully get your application approved, even without a physical ID or printout:

  1. The "Open Document on Screen" Method (The Quick Fix)
The system needs to see your document and the current date/URL, which is why printing is problematic. You can try turning your screen into the document:

Step 1: Prepare the Document

Open your official digital document (Student ID, Transcript, or Enrollment Letter) on your computer screen. Ensure the Issuing Institution (University of the People) and an Expiration Date or Current Academic Period are clearly visible.

Step 2: Use the Webcam

Maximize the document on your screen (make it as large and clear as possible).

Use the webcam to take a picture of the document displayed on your monitor.

Crucially: When taking the shot, you can sometimes include a sticky note or a small handwritten piece of paper with the current date or your GitHub username next to the screen to prove the photo wasn't pre-uploaded (although this is often optional).

  1. The Official Enrollment Letter (Recommended)
GitHub often prefers an official letter of enrollment over a student ID, as these letters usually contain the required validity dates.

What to Ask UoPeople for: Request a formal, signed Letter of Enrollment or Proof of Enrollment that explicitly states:

Your Full Name.

The Current Semester/Academic Year (e.g., Fall 2025).

The document should ideally have a date of issuance (which must be recent).

How to Use It: Display this letter on your screen and use the Webcam Method described in Step 1.

  1. If All Else Fails: Contact GitHub Education Support
If you have tried the screen-shot method with your digital document and it was rejected, you need to manually contact their support team.

Submitting a Ticket: Look for the link on the verification page that says something like "My document is not clear" or "Contact support for help" (this option usually appears after a few failed attempts).

Provide a Direct Upload: When you submit a ticket, you will usually be given an option to attach the original digital document directly to the support request.

Explain the Situation: Clearly state in the ticket:

You are a student at the University of the People, which is 100% remote.

You only possess digital documents.

Explain why the webcam method failed for your digital document (e.g., glare, clarity issues).

Key Takeaway: GitHub needs to see your School Name, your Name, and a Date (either issue date or validity date). The screen-shot of a valid digital document is the most common successful workaround for online university students.
