Hi everyone,

Today, GitHub notified me that my student discount would expire in 13 days, so I followed the prompt to reverify my student status.

During the verification process, I didn’t have my student ID with me, so I selected the transcript option and uploaded my transcript instead. When asked to share my location, it showed that I wasn’t near my university campus, so I explained that I’m currently studying abroad at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) this semester and uploaded my exchange program admission letter as proof.

However, my verification was instantly rejected, and my student benefits were revoked right afterward — now I don’t have access to anything anymore.

I tried clicking “Start an application” again, but it no longer lets me upload any documents. It only allows taking a photo, which I can’t do right now because I don’t have my student ID or transcript physically with me.

Could anyone please help me recover access or re-verify my student status properly?

Hi @Charley-xiao,

It's very likely that the problem is due to the fact that you're studying abroad, but when you select the school, its physical location is taken into account, which is obviously not the same as your current location.

Your academic proof must clearly indicate that you are part of a distance learning program, as stated in the Student Developer Pack Application FAQs, otherwise your application will be rejected.

In order to qualify for the GitHub education program, we must be able to verify that you are either located close to your campus, or that you are a part of a verifiable distance learning program.

Try contacting support by opening a ticket here, select "Other" and explain your problem.

Hi @davevad93,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, my academic proof clearly states that it is a distance learning program, yet my application got automatically rejected.

Moreover, I cannot start a new application since the portal only accepts taking photos now instead of uploading files for some reason.

I have opened a ticket and am looking forward to their reply.

The ticket didn't help. The support center just repeated what the FAQ page says. The real problem now is that however I tried not using a VPN, re-logging in, and even using a new device, the application only allows me to take photos instead of uploading files, which, like I've said before, I can't do right now because I don't have my student ID or transcript physically with me.

Moreover, my student pack is revoked and everything started to bill. I'm not paying for that! GitHub is so fucked up...

I've also tried printing the files out and taking photos. But again I got automatically rejected. WTF is happening??? If GitHub doesn't want to give students benefits, just don't do it; no one wants to go through the entire process and get rejected in the end.

Hey @Charley-xiao, I'm very sorry, I know it's a very annoying situation. As I said in my previous reply:

It's very likely that the problem is due to the fact that you're studying abroad, but when you select the school, its physical location is taken into account, which is obviously not the same as your current location

My guess is that your documentation doesn't clearly indicate what GitHub considers "distance learning", since studying abroad or on an exchange isn't considered as such.
