I noticed today that passing a distinct
StringDTypeinstance toastypewasn't sufficient to actually change the dtype withcopy=False. This fixes that issue by usingPyArray_SafeCastinstead ofPyArray_EquivTypes.See #26147 which introduced
PyArray_SafeCastand fixed a similar issue.
