@rafaelgieschke created pull request #1254 some time ago. Unfortunately it has never been merged.
This pull request bases on his request and thus replaces it. I have merged and adapted Rafael's branch onto a fresh master as rebasing onto >500 commits lead to a too long sequence of conflicts.
It would be great to have this one merged, finally.
