This allows Matplotlib's internal representation of dates/times (float number of days) to be converted to timedelta objects. This will eventually allow timedelta objects to be plotted (see #8869 for tracker issue).

Docstring needs to be updated to match the variable outputs. Otherwise 👍

This is a timedelta or list[timedelta]
