This is a suggested alternative to the fix in #1404, and works outside of pyplot. It hasn't been tested to verify that it fixes the main issue in #1404.

@ChrisBeaumont: This is a good point. I think this should go on 1.2.x. Since it's so simple, I'm just going to cherry-pick this there and then close this issue.
