What does a 'perfect' MPL example look like? #6221

It seems to me the examples shipped with matplotlib could need some love. But I don't really understand what the consensus is on a 'perfect' example. I found MEP 12 which has some nice information, but does not contain any information about 'functionalized' examples (like PR #3582, #3577, #3579). Personally, looking through these PRs, I feel like wrapping everything in a function adds a lot of noise for little gain. They are not written for general use, so why bother?

Anyway, long story short: is there an .... example .... of an example?
