For issue #283. Any feedback is welcome. Most of this seems to be removing unit test wrappers around the optimize checks.
A major difficulty I am having is reducing the size of the tests. They are very long, and it's not obvious to me how to reduce the number of
call,call(andoptimize-callusages in the source.
