The piece was conceived using the first 32 bars of the second movement (Andante con moto, “Death and the Maiden”)
from Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor (D. 810).
However, it can be performed using any 32 bars from a four-part movement in 4/4 bars.
The total duration has been set to 32 bars in 4/4 at MM 6. This corresponds to 21 minutes 20 seconds.
Other tempos are also possible:
- MM 8 = 16 minutes
- MM 7.5 = 17 minutes 4 seconds
- MM 5 = 25 minutes 36 seconds
- MM 4 = 32 minutes
The entire piece should be played with a practice mute (Hotel Silencer).
