Palauan

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *balay. However, this term does not reflect regular inherited sound changes from the Proto-Malayo-Polynesian etymon; the term could be an early borrowing, possibly from a Philippine language (compare Cebuano baláy) or a chance resemblance. Doublet of bai.
