Pronunciation

- woman
- Synonym: kadın
Usage notes
[edit]- Used as a title, the word is usually capitalized and followed by a person's name, often her surname or full name (as in "Bayan Ayşe Demirel"). This is unlike the more traditional title hanım, which is used after a person's name, most commonly just her given name (as in "Ayşe Hanım"). hanım is also significantly more common than bayan, with the latter primarily being used in translations of Western works, where Mrs., Mme etc. are used with one's surname.
- The word can be controversial when used to simply mean woman, as some people perceive it as being used by those who consider kadın (“woman”) to be vulgar or impolite.
