From Javanese ꦧꦧꦸ (babu, female servant, literally mother), from Old Javanese babu (mother; older servant), wawuh (familiar, acquainted), probably ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(ʔ)boʔ (mother). Compare with Temiar buk (mother), Jehai baboʔ (woman), Vietnamese vợ (wife) and Mon ၝောံ (bɜ̀ʔ)).
