From Latin sagittārius (archer), calque of Ancient Greek τοξότης (toxótēs); possibly adapted from Akkadian 𒀯𒉺𒉋𒊕 (pabilsaĝ, the bow-armed god Pabilsaĝ) (see Pabilsaĝ), from Sumerian 𒀯𒉺𒉋𒊕 (MULPA.BIL2.SAG).[1]
