Android 15 is the fifteenth major release and the 22nd version of Android, the mobile operating system developed by the Open Handset Alliance and led by Google. The first developer preview was released on February 16, 2024,[2] the first beta was released on April 11, 2024,[2] and the final source code was released on September 3, 2024.[3] Android 15 was released for Google Pixel devices on October 15, 2024.[4]

As of June 2026, 17.03% of Android devices run Android 15, making it the 2nd most used version of Android.[5]

Android 15 is internally codenamed "Vanilla Ice Cream".[6][7] The first developer preview (also known as DP1) for Android 15 was released on February 16, 2024,[8] while the second developer preview (DP2) was released on March 21, 2024.[9]

The first beta of Android 15 was released on April 11, 2024. It contained updates such as displaying apps as edge-to-edge by default, and app archiving.[10] The second beta launched on May 15, 2024, and came with features such as private space, improved widget previews, and improved picture-in-picture.[11] The third beta of Android 15 was released on June 18, 2024. It launched a slightly redesigned passkey and credentials manager.[12] The fourth and final beta of Android 15 was launched on July 18, 2024. The updates included predictive back animations and app screen sharing (allowing users to share or record 1 app instead of their entire screen).[13]

Android 15 was officially launched for Google Pixel devices on October 15, 2024.[14]

The official DP1 release notes state that the following features will be introduced in Android 15:[8]

Privacy and Security

Introduces a sandboxed profile environment that allows users to separate and secure sensitive applications under an independent biometric or cryptographic lock layer, hiding their visibility from the primary application drawer and notification systems.[15]

Restricts the execution loop of apps targeting old application architectures below software development kit (SDK) version 24 to block legacy execution loops, alongside mandatory redaction filters preventing untrusted background services from reading sensitive one-time passcodes (OTPs) from notification logs. [15]

Adds native cryptographic end-to-end file integrity protections via the FileIntegrityManager, leveraging custom Linux kernel security features to ensure application binaries have not been altered or corrupted. [15]

User Experience and Multitasking

Adds system capability to share or record a standalone application window rather than the entire display layout, accompanied by a status bar warning that automatically terminates active projections when the device is locked. [15]

Adds dedicated runtime tracking callbacks that invoke immediate system alerts to active software processes whenever their running components transition into visibility within an active screen capture boundary. [15]

Implements a persistent, pin-able taskbar configuration layout tailored natively for large-screen form factors, tablets, and foldable mobile devices. [15]

Adds a universal, system-wide configuration toggle enabling users to force an edge-to-edge layout styling on all applications by default. [15]

Camera and Connectivity

Implements an auto-exposure processing framework for the camera preview stream to enhance visibility and QR scanning configurations in low-light environments, alongside hardware adjustments providing precise flashlight single and torch intensity parameters. [15]

Integrates core communication infrastructure parameters providing native platform layer assistance for short message service (SMS), multimedia messaging (MMS), and rich communication services (RCS) protocols operating over global satellite networks. [15]

Upgrades the Near Field Communication (NFC) routing stack to enable single-tap checkout options while observing secure multi-app contactless transaction registrations. [15]

Media and Graphics

Upgrades the native PdfRenderer engine to support rendering password-protected PDF files, localized form editing, annotations, and highly efficient linear search optimizations. [15]

Integrates virtual MIDI 2.0 network connectivity software hooks, allowing musical gadget applications to communicate with external physical synthesizer gear over universal USB cables. [15]

Upgrades Canvas text drawing tools with Matrix44 processing capabilities, allowing complex 3D graphic coordinate transforms to be computed directly over text items. [15]

Developer Tools and Performance

Introduces the ProfilingManager API framework allowing localized client applications to request and generate system heap dumps, execution stack sampling, and memory trace diagnostics directly into their local storage directories. [15][16]

Updates the Android Dynamic Performance Framework (ADPF) to feature active thermal headroom thresholds alongside specialized power-efficiency hints for heavy background workloads. [15][16]
