We store encrypted material on our servers, but we never see your passphrase, so we cannot open your messages ourselves. New accounts use ML-KEM-768 (post-quantum protection, NIST standard, related to Kyber) together with strong conventional crypto. Some older accounts may still use a previous RSA-style setup until keys are refreshed. When you are logged in, you can export a key backup from the dashboard.
You're right, nothing and nobody can be trusted, however we have made our best efforts be as transparent as possible and have therefore released our user encryption module source code on GitLab, you can access it by clicking the icon in the footer. The general rule is that you shouldn't provide any information you wouldn't want to be leaked.
No, while we make sure to encrypt any data stored on our servers / infrastructure, data is not being encrypted as soon as it exits our systems onto the GSM / CMDA network.
Anything you want really, if you need to create a second account on Signal, Telegram, Whatsapp or any other service that requires a mobile phone number. You can even use it with social networks to stop them selling your data to advertisers. You can use it to message friends or relatives if you need to.
You can receive messages from anywhere and send to most countries. However, for short-term and virtual numbers, some countries have restrictions on direct SMS delivery. In these cases, your message is delivered via a secure web link instead. Long-term numbers use dedicated hardware and can send direct SMS to all countries without restrictions. Check our FAQ for the full list of affected countries.
Yes, outgoing messages are screened by our self-hosted Gemma 3 LLM to detect spam, phishing, and fraud. Messages that pass screening are not retained by the filter. Blocked messages are encrypted and retained so you can see them and appeal if needed—you won't be charged. No third parties are involved. Read our AI Policy for full details.
Most of the information we store is encrypted with your private key, only some metadata (such as dates) remains unencrypted. We do recommend you use an email that cannot be traced back to you.
We will comply with any lawful search warrant, however due to our security practice our canary, which you can find in the footer, will not get updated.

Crypton Travel eSIM is our prepaid travel data product: digital SIM profiles you download to a compatible device for mobile data in many countries—no physical SIM swap. Plans offer instant activation, broad coverage, and flexible data options.
After purchasing Crypton Travel eSIM, you will receive a QR code and activation instructions via email. Scan the QR with your device's camera (iOS) or go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan (Android) and scan the code. The eSIM installs and activates on your device. You can also use the manual activation code if QR scanning is not available.
eSIM is supported on most modern smartphones and tablets. This includes iPhone XS and newer models, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and many other recent devices. Check your device manufacturer's website to confirm eSIM compatibility.

Yes. You can suspend Crypton Travel eSIM from your dashboard—this pauses the data plan without canceling, and you can reactivate later. You can also cancel, which ends the plan permanently. Canceled eSIMs cannot be reactivated; refunds follow our terms.
Virtual phone numbers are cloud-based phone numbers that are not tied to a physical SIM card. They are provided by third-party cloud providers and can be used for receiving SMS messages through our platform. They offer flexibility and can be used from anywhere with an internet connection.
Virtual numbers may work for some TOTP/verification services, but we do not guarantee or officially support this functionality. Some services may block virtual numbers, and delivery of verification codes is not guaranteed. For reliable TOTP/2FA verification, we strongly recommend using our physical SIM card phone numbers instead.
Virtual numbers can be used for receiving SMS messages and general communication purposes. However, they may not work with all services that require phone number verification. They are best suited for general messaging and communication rather than account verification or critical services.
Both short-term and long-term numbers can send and receive SMS. Short-term numbers use our general gateway (the recipient may see "SMS" as the sender) with flexible 1–12 month rentals. Long-term numbers use dedicated gateways where your actual number shows as the sender, with prepaid bundle tiers of 3, 6, 9, or 12 months—a minimum of 3 months applies. Long-term suits ongoing business or personal use; short-term fits verification codes and temporary needs.

No. Crypton Travel eSIM and Crypton Mobile are two separate products. Crypton Travel eSIM is prepaid travel data—one-off bundles with fixed validity, data-focused, billed separately from phone-number rentals. Crypton Mobile is an ongoing mobile service: a permanent eSIM line with optional data top-ups, voice, SMS, and an optional US or UK number, with recurring SIM maintenance. Purchases and support are handled separately.
Crypton Mobile gives you a permanent eSIM that stays active with recurring SIM maintenance, plus optional mobile data top-ups, voice, and SMS on partner networks. You can add an optional dedicated US or UK phone number (where offered, with its own annual terms). It is not the same as Crypton Travel eSIM (prepaid travel data-only).
Typically: non-expiring eSIM profile (kept active by maintenance fees), ability to top up mobile data, voice and SMS on the mobile service, and optional add-on of a US or UK number. Exact features and prices are shown on the Crypton Mobile page and at checkout.

Crypton Travel eSIM (data-only) does not receive SMS. Crypton Mobile is a full mobile service that supports SMS on your line, subject to carriers and each app's policies—verification still varies by service. For UK numbers used only inside the Crypton web app, rented UK phone numbers may fit some workflows better.

Yes — for long-term numbers on our dedicated gateway. When your rental ends or you cancel voluntarily, you can request return of the physical SIM to an InPost locker in Poland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, or Luxembourg. Shipping is a flat €25. If your number recently expired, you have 14 days to either restore digital SMS or choose SIM return instead. Track progress from your phone numbers dashboard.
