When I go to add a modifier, I have a menu "Unassigned" (it may have changed to "uncataloged") that lists some, but not all of my Geometry Nodes. There is no obvious pattern which appear there. How do I remove a node group from this list, or add one to it that isn't showing up?

Note, I am not asking how to make node groups show up as something other than "Unassigned" (i.e. how to make them assets and properly catalogue them). I want them to not show up at all.

Node Groups are shown in the add modifier menu if their usage as modifier is enabled. You can toggle that in the Side panel of the Geometry Nodes editor:

If that is disabled, they should not appear in the add modifier menu.

If you have Geometry Nodes groups amongst your assets they will also be shown in the add modifier menu. That depends on the settings of the assets in their files in your asset libraries though. If the node groups are marked as assets they can also be put into categories in the Asset Browser. Once they are in some categories, those categories will become sub-menus in the add modifier menu.

  • $\begingroup$ There is. You can use it in other geometry nodes groups. Modifiers however show up in Add Modifier menu, that's how you add them. seems to make sense to me. If you add a modifier and then disable it's use as a modifier it still remains. But there is no way to add it as modifier again through the UI. You can add it from the object they exist on by copying through Ctrl+L menu Copy Modifiers as well. Why do you want them not to show up in the menu in the first place? $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ In my mind, a "modifier" is something I might reuse. I also use GN for things that are very much only applicable to a single object. I need those to be applied to their respective objects, but don't want them cluttering the Modifiers menu. $\endgroup$

$\begingroup$ Maybe mark them as assets and give them another category, or add the modifier and disable use as modifier after it's added. I think that actually gives you exactly what you want. If you add it once and don't want to add it any more, then there is no downside to disabling them after first use. They remain as modifiers for the original object... $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ Yeah, I think "add the modifier and disable use as modifier after it's added" is probably what I want. In any case, TIL what the "enable usage as modifier" checkbox does, which is largely what I needed. Thanks! $\endgroup$
