Dee D. Drell is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. From 2012 to 2017, Drell served as chief judge of the district court.[1]

David Joseph was nominated by President Donald Trump (R) to replace Dell on the Western District of Louisiana. Joseph was confirmed on July 28, 2020.

Early life and education

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Drell graduated from Tulane University with his bachelor's degree in 1968 and from Tulane University Law School with his J.D. in 1971.[1]

Drell served in the U.S. Army's judge advocate general corps from 1971 to 1975.[1]

Drell was nominated by President George W. Bush on January 15, 2003, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana vacated by F.A. Little, Jr. The American Bar Association rated Drell Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Drell's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 27, 2003, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on April 3, 2003. Drell was confirmed on a recorded 99-0 vote of the U.S. Senate on April 9, 2003. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) did not vote on the nomination. Drell received his judicial commission on April 10, 2003. From 2012 to 2017, Drell served as the district court's chief judge. He elected to take senior status beginning on November 30, 2017.[1][2][3][4]
