}Abstract This paper reviews the changes in quantitative marine fisheries management between 1985 and 2010. The two primary areas where quantitative methods have been employed are in the assessment of stock size and exploitation rates, and in the design and evaluation of harvest strategies. In 1985, some areas had well established assessment programs in place, and the assessment methods have been relatively stable over the 25 years in question. In other places, the evolution of methods has been…

The development and application of a length-based method to estimate the spawning potential ratio in data-poor fish stocks
- 2014
Environmental Science, Biology
A meta-analysis of marine species demonstrated that species that are often considered to be quite different, essentially have the same life-history strategy when viewed on the same relative scale, and suggest that there is potential to establish a theoretical framework for ‘borrowing’ knowledge from well-studied species to apply to unstudied species and populations as an initial starting point for management.

This model predicts a dual role of fishing rate, stabilizing when reproductive volume is high and destabilizing when it is low, and suggests either under- or over-compensatory dynamics depending on the reproductive volume and long term catch levels.

Increasing biological realism of fisheries stock assessment: towards hierarchical Bayesian methods
- 2012
Political Science, Biology
The main message emerging from this review is that fisheries scientists must go beyond the tradi- tional stock-assessment data and explore the resources available in other fields of biological research, such as ecology, life- history theory and evolutionary biology, in addition to utilizing data available from other stocks of the same or comparable species.

Integrating marine protected areas with catch regulation
- 2006
Biology
It is found that when a stock is managed at maximum sustainable yield, or is overfished, implementation of an MPA will require a reduction in TAC to avoid in- creased fishing pressure on the stock outside the MPA, and models that consider differential adult and larval dispersal need to be explored to see if these results are found with the more complex biology of a two-stage model.
