Although the Bond number is generally known in fluid mechanics to describe the effects of surface tension and weight of a liquid drop or bubble, W.N. Bond as an individual is currently hardly known. Based on a lucky coincidence, the author was able to find documents, medals and photographs through his grandson. This work describes on the one hand the physical background of Bond's works, mainly relating to the measurement of viscosity and surface tension, the significance and relevance of the…

Evaluation of surface wettability by means of the measurement of the adhesive force between a microstructured hydrophobic surface and a water droplet

The pull-off forces between water and microstructured hydrophobic surfaces were calculated and measured in this study. A hydrophilically modified nickel disk was used to hold a drop of water.

Lateral retention of water droplets on solid surfaces without gravitational effect

Gravity is commonly considered negligible when the surface tension is dominant; i.e., the Bond number is less than 1. In this paper, however, the authors present a technique in which drops slide over

Numerical Analysis of the Effect of Particle Shape and Adhesion on the Segregation of Powder Mixtures

Segregation of granules is an undesired phenomenon in which particles in a mixture separate from each other based on the differences in their physical and chemical properties. It is, therefore,

The capillary bistable switch constrained by pinning/wetting angles as a sensor of pressure

The dependence of details of the droplet morphology and energy on the difference in pressure at both sides of the plate is calculated by means of the semi-analytical model and Surface Evolver simulations.

Transport phenomena and dimensionless numbers: towards a new methodological approach

This review presents a new methodical approach to the classification of dimensionless numbers as pair relationships of the main forces controlling transport phenomena in fluids at the macroscopic

Fluid transport in open-cell polymeric foams: effect of morphology and surface wettability

Fluid transport behavior inside polymer foams (polyHIPEs) templated from high-internal-phase emulsions (HIPEs) has been studied. Morphological properties of the foams were controlled through shearing

A CFD Study Assisted with Experimental Confirmation for Liquid Shape Control of Electromagnetically Levitated Bulk Materials

Two types of optimized electromagnetic levitators were designed to achieve the free surface shape control of metallic melts as the combined results of the Lorentz force, sample gravity, and surface

Numerical simulation of wetting-induced collapse in partially saturated granular soils

Wetting collapse in sand is examined by means of experiments under X-ray tomography and pore-scale coupled DEM simulations. Two different deformation patterns are observed depending on the average

LXXVII. The change of surface tension with time

Summary Experiments by the authors and others show that the surface tension of pure liquids has reached its steady value in less than 0·005 sec. Hence it is concluded that the newly introduced

The surface tension of a moving water sheet

The direct impact of two cylindrical jets of liquid causes the liquid to emerge radially in a plane at right angles to the common axis of the jets. The maximum diameter of the disc of moving liquid

The Pressure-Gradient in Liquids Flowing Through Cones

The pressure gradient in a liquid that flows through a conical tube is considered as depending on three effects: the variation in kinetic energy with distance along the axis; the loss due to purely

Viscosity Determination by Means of Orifices and Short Tubes

The Paper consists of an investigation of the corrections applicable to the determination of the viscosity of liquids by flow through tubes, due to the abnormal flow at the ends. General expressions

The Effect of Viscosity on Orifice Flows

Determinations were made of the coefficient of discharge through an orifice 0.1469 cm. in diameter of solutions of glycerine and water, varying in kinematic viscosity from 0.01 to 7. The results are

Turbulent flow through tubes

The flow of fluid through long straight tubes of circular section was experimented on, at speeds in the neighbourhood of the lower critical velocity, in an attempt to detect any trace of periodicity

Viscosity of Air

RECENT determinations of the viscosity of air by Bond1 (capillary tube method) and Kellstrom2 (rotating cylinder) have yielded a value Substituted in Millikan's data on the determination of e, this

Theory of liquid flow through cones

This Paper gives an approximate general solution of the hydro-dynamical equations for liquid flow through conical tubes of circular section, the errors due to the approximation being small for
